Most all pesticides have, on the containers, what to do about pesticide poisoning. The instructions will be specific for that sort of chemical and will be followed to the letter. Don't presume that as you heard something general about emergency measures for poisoning, that it will work for any particular insecticide. When poisoning has occurred you have to figure out how much has been ingested or spilled on the skin or other area. Then taking both fast and correct action is urgent for keeping horrible consequences from occurring.
based primarily on the instructions on the insecticide container, give the 1st help mentioned. Call 911 immediately after. If anybody else is with you have them call for emergency assistance while you administer whatever first aid is cited. Poison control services might be contacted at 1-800-858-7378. This could connect you with a national service that will be able to render some help.
Areas of the body where lethal substances that have been spilled on the skin should be instantly rinsed with water and continued for 15 minutes. Clothing with the substance on it should be instantly removed. If the spill has led to a burn, do not apply any sort of lotion or greasy substance. Cover loosely with clean, soft cloths and call for medical assistance if needed. If the poison has been splashed in the eye, it should be held open and rinsed very carefully with tap water. Don't use anything except water.
For victims of inhaled toxins, first get them out of the area where the airborn substance may continue to infiltrate their breathing system. Get them to take deep breaths of fresh air. If the victim is non responsive, unconscious or not breathing, call 911. Administer cpr if at all possible. Take care if you're attempting to rescue a victim from a fumigated area lest you be overtaken yourself. If a respirator or chemical dust mask isn't right away available, tie a clean cloth across your nose and mouth. Get an enormous enough rag to cover your face and tuck down within your shirt in the front. Move quickly to get the victim out and when reaching fresh air, take lots of deep breaths.
For poison that've been swallowed, do not prompt vomiting unless the 1st aid instructions on the pesticide container clearly and in particular tell you to do so. If in doubt, contact the poison control center. Generally, the victim should drink small amounts of water to water down the poison. Do not give the victim milk unless the container indoctrinates you to do so. Contact 911 and get medical help for the victim immediately.
